We came to Kauai to celebrate 35 years together, and what we found was so much more than a postcard-perfect anniversary trip. We found ourselves on muddy trails, standing still in shallow water as sea turtles swam past us, and watching the sunrise paint the sky in colors we didn’t know existed. This is the Kauai we want to share with you.

The Kalalau Trail: When You Know When to Turn Back

Our first morning, we tackled the Kalalau Trail along the Na Pali Coast at Heana State Park—and it was stunning. Every step offered another view that made us understand why people rave about this hike. The lookout alone was worth the muddy scramble to get there.

But here’s the honest part: recent rains had transformed the trail into something more challenging than we expected. What should have been a manageable creek crossing had become a legitimate river, with a current strong enough that we watched people wade through thigh-high water with real caution. We even witnessed a young couple with a year-old baby make the crossing and continue on—brave souls.

We made the decision to turn back, and I’m so glad we did. Sometimes the best travel moments aren’t about conquering every mile; they’re about knowing yourself and enjoying what you’ve already discovered. We spent hours at that lookout, soaking in the views and the moment together.

Poipu Beach: Our Favorite Place (And Ours Alone)

If Kalalau was the adventure, Poipu Beach became our sanctuary. This is where we fell in love with Kauai all over again.

The waves were incredible—golden sand, beautiful clear waters, the kind of energy that makes you feel alive just standing there. We climbed around the rocks, walked the shoreline, and watched surfers make the most of every swell. But what made Poipu truly special was what happened in the water.

We went snorkeling here, enjoyed the reef fish and all the sea creatures on the rocks. The timing of our visits were around when the Hawaiian monk seals and green sea turtles arrived. Watching these creatures come in at sunset was mesmerizing, but the real magic happened when we were standing in the shallows. While watching the fish and sea creatures move around the rocks, the turtles began to arrive.

We couldn’t get back to shore in time, so we did what the locals recommended: we stood completely still. Turtles don’t have great vision, but their other senses are extraordinary. As we waited, quietly and patiently, a turtle swam right past us… then more came. It’s hard to put into words. You’re not just seeing wildlife; you’re sharing space with it. Respectfully. Reverently.

We returned to Poipu again and again. Some places just call you back.

The Views That Took Our Breath Away

Waimea Canyon State Park became another favorite. We hiked to the top of Waipo’o Falls and spent several hours just being there—taking in the canyon, the waterfalls, the cliffs. The scale of it all is humbling.

But the sunrise from our balcony at Wailua near Coconut Beach Park? That was the moment we’ll carry with us. The colors—reds, blues, purples, oranges—painted the sky in a way that felt personal, like the island was showing off just for us. We watched it again on our last morning in Kauai, and it felt like a proper goodbye.

The Small Moments That Matter Most

Between the big hikes and beach days, we collected the little treasures:

  • Malasadas from a local spot (honestly, the best donuts we’ve ever had)
  • Glass Beach, where we gathered small, smooth pieces of sea glass—each one a tiny work of art
  • Wailua Falls, the double waterfall that looks even more stunning in person than in photos
  • Shipwreck Beach, where the drama of the landscape matches the power of the waves

These weren’t on any “must-do” list we found online. They were recommendations, detours, and happy accidents—the kind of experiences that make a trip feel like yours.

What Kauai Taught Us

After 35 years together, we thought we knew what we were looking for in a trip: good weather, beautiful beaches, time together. Kauai gave us all of that, but it also gave us something we didn’t expect: the reminder that the best travel moments come when you slow down, pay attention, and respect the places you’re visiting.

Standing still so a turtle could swim past. The Kauai wild chickens visiting during your meal. Turning back from a trail because the conditions weren’t right. Spending hours at a lookout just watching the light change. Sitting in chairs at our favorite beach staring at the seals and turtles, not rushing to the next thing.

That’s the Kauai we experienced. And we can’t wait to go back.
